Families of Keyston 1600 to 1901

Keyston (or Chetelstan) appears as a settlement in Domesday Book, in the hundred of Leightonstone in the county of Huntingdonshire. In 1086 it consisted of 32 households, made up of 24 villagers and 8 smallholders. It has never been a particularly large village with the highest number of residents recorded as 237 on the 1881 census, following a large increase in the number of children in the village.

The name Keyston is derived from ‘Boundary stone of a man called Ketil’ believed to be of old Scandinavian origin (the language of the Vikings)

We intend to start populating the database, beginning with census data. This will create a couple of issues in that we do not know the exact date of birth only the age of the resident. Hence date of births will be in the form of Est 31 Dec YYYY where YYYY represents the year of birth based on the age shown on the census. The other issue is that we would like to have the maiden name of all female residents shown on their record, but married women will have their husband’s surname until we move onto the marriage records, even then they may not change if they were not married in Keyston church.

All Residents appearing on the 1841 - 1901 Censuses (900 Individuals) have now been captured
